In the 260-day Mayan Time Cycle called the Tzol'kin, each day is know by its Day Sign and Number.
Visuals of the 20 Day Signs and 13 Numbers
20 Day Signs
There are 20 Day Signs (or Kin). Each day is named for, and manifests the qualities of, its Day Sign:
a Dragon day,
a Wind day,
a Night day,
a Seed day, etc.
The Day Signs follow one another, counterclockwise, around the circle, always in the same order. We get to know each Day Sign through experience, and by making associations with its name and image, as we live the qualities of its day. Which are already familiar to you? Which feel unknown or even strange? Can you remember days that have felt like these?
The Numbers
The Maya use dots and lines to express Numbers. And each number means very much what it looks like. So one dot is one, embodying unity and purpose. Two dots for two, embodying relatedness and challenge. Three dots for three, embodying motion, and say through five and then into six and beyond.
The Number next to each Day Sign lets you know where we are in the 13-day Wave:
a 1 Dragon day,
a 2 Wind day,
a 3 Night day,
a 4 Seed day, etc.
The Numbers each have unique qualities too, that influence what aspects of the Day Sign will show up. A 4 Seed day (4 is Form) will be different from a 12 Seed day (12 is Integration).
The 13-Day Wave
The 13-day Waves move us around and around through the 20 Day Signs. 1 Dragon begins a wave that ends with 13 Skywalker.
Then, 1 Wizard begins a new wave. The color of the spiral changes with the waves.
Each wave takes its name and color from the Day Sign that falls on the first day of the wave:
a Dragon wave,
a Wizard wave,
a Hand wave,
a Sun wave, etc.
We travel in the energy of that Day Sign for the entire 13 day Wave. It sets the tone, the themes and purpose, for the wave. Something emerges and unfolds over that Wave related to the qualities of the Day Sign of the Wave.
The 13 Moons of the Year
Along with the Numbered Days through the Waves of the 260-day Tzol'kin, we need a way of knowing where (or when) we are in that spin. So we connect it with where we are in the Year.
In this calendar, the New Year falls on July 26th, and is made up of 13 Moons (or months) of 28 days each (equaling 364 days), plus one Day Out of Time (July 25th).
These 13 Moons each have their story and meaning too, because they are Numbered as well.
Moon 1 ~ Purpose
Moon 2 ~ Relatedness
Moon 3 ~ Motion
Moon 4 ~ Form, etc.
The qualities of the Numbers remain the same, whether they last for a day or a moon. Because the number 3 embodies Motion, Moon 3 has similar qualities to Day 3, it just lasts longer.
The 5 Colors
You'll see that each Day Sign has a color, and the Day Sign leading a wave lends its color to the wave. There's also another thin line in the Moon Spirals, alongside the wave. This colored line shows what Realm we are in. There are 5 Realms, one for each color, in the 260-day Tzol'kin. It's kind of like trimesters in pregnancy, different phases of the cycle. Each Realm is made up of 4 waves (always the same four waves), and has the qualities of its color
Red ~ New Beginnings
White ~ Refining
Blue ~ Transforming
Yellow ~ Ripening
Green ~ Magic
